What do you mean how does this demonstrate anything? Of all the different types of metaphores Bush could have used to describe his election victory, he used a CAPITALISTIC, BUSINESS metaphor.

Duh.
"People asked me how to describe this victory. Um, uh.. it was like earning capital. I earned political capital this campaign.. and I intend to spend it."

Just saw him say this on CNN three minutes ago. HILARIOUS. If this does not blatently demonstrate that it's BIG BUSINESS IN POWER I don't know what does.

Gold.

We're are in George Orwell's 1984. Make it your bible.
Though its no secret that Bush is in the pocket of big business, I think it was just a metaphor. But it does show you where his mindset is.

Wasn't Bush once quoted as saying in front of a very filthy rich crowd something like you are my kind of people, or my grassroot? I forget the exact words.
The "Billionnaires For Bush" group got kickstarted as a result. There is in fact a whole industry based on Bush bashing. The gems that he has produced are out of this world. Fiction exceeding reality.

The guy is certainly not the brighest lightbulb but he sure understands how the system works (or doesn't) while taking full advantage of it. Idiot-savant we call them in French. But people don't normally vote for them and they do not reach public office.

Oost,

I saw Bush saying that on Jon Stewart but my take on that, (could be out of context because if was just a clip) was that he had been given "politial capital" as in a mandate by winning a larger majority and that meant he could do more of what he wants to do without question because more people said so. The indignant, arrogant look on his face when he said it was chilling. Jon Stewart's reply was something like "In that case he had borrowed all the political capital he'd been spending over the last four years and he shouldn't be spending any more until he paid it back."

I watched the entire speech and what I got out of it was that George Bush was was going to do whatever he felt like and the rest of the world, including the half of the US population that vehemently disagree with him, no longer mattered at all.

It's going to take the US and the world decades to recover from this belligerent little idiot.

Agreed.

The twinkle in his eye when he said "...and I intend to spend it," was the scariest comment I've heard in a long time. It's as if in his own mind he believes he's been given the go-ahead to do whatever he wants.

Heaven help us.

Reminds me of when Stephen Harper slips and says "the company I mean country".

I agree Oost--he obviously chooses to believe he has a "clear mandate" despit the droves of people who voted for Kerry and the split down the middle of the country, and he's going to push his vision for a new world disorder even harder. I'm sure his win just confirms for him that he's doing God's work. Eek.

Reminds me of one of his major speeches after 9/11--he had the same twinkle in his eye when he said "Through this crisis, I see an opportunity". The U.S. invaded Afghanistan soon after.

Like what? Their brain-dead Senate reform plan, or their (probably unconstitutional) idea of having Canadians express their political affiliation on their income tax form? Did you read the Tories' campaign platform? As evidenced by the conflicting opinions of Harper and other party members/spokespeople(ex. bilingualism), the Conservatives themselves don't even know what their policies are, or if they do they're not sharing them with Canadians. And then they complain that they are accused of having a hidden agenda!

Even if they did have amazing policy, the Tories are doomed as long as they have that negative, unpersonable sore loser as their leader. Policy won't change the fact that Canadians don't like Stephen Harper. SES just released a poll showing that only 17% of Canadians think Harper would be the best PM out of the federal leaders, compared to Martin's 35%. Ouch!

I am a centrist, and I could vote for a Conservative candidate if the party has a good leader articulating good policies. They have neither.

Yes. If the Conservative party wants to go somewhere they are going to have to send Harper packing, and change their overall attitude. They seem to be sinking into an opposition mentality after all these long years of Liberal power, and that will not do.

Bush said: "I earned political capital this campaign.. and I intend to spend it."

Political ? I thought he'd said "human" capital.

It doesn't really matter Michou...he has no capital at all. Bush has been living on his credit cards fo a long time and if he keeps on being belligerent, Visa (the EU) and Mastercard (China) are going to insist on payment.

Guess that brings us back to Stephen Harper...his plan of co-signing to give Bush legitimacy will land us in trouble too.

Martin isn't really any better, but there are those within his party who at least try to control him.
