I have so far noted in the 20 or so pages of this document, the 2 main problems are money and proper training.
Not much money, since the government is gutting the military for other programs, and not much proper training, since we don't have the recruits, or the training officers to do such.

On a similar but slightly different note:
Has anyone actually ever seen a T.V. advertisement for joining the Armed Forces? I sure haven't. That probably makes people less prone to join the military.

The oportunity should be available to all Canadian youth to Join our Military.
Our military based on the Defence of Canada and responding when neccessary to natural disasters, and Peace keeping.

gets our youth off the streets and out of jails, challenging and entertaining the youthful need for that adrenaline rush,as only a teen can know.
And only organization such as DND can provide.
Providing Canada with the chance of reaping the returns investing in the potential of each and every child.

since Canada's Military requirements are unique the chances of success are quite high.

Dennis Baker

I love how when questions of 'risking ones life' for various military excursions we see many people advocate the military for others. If you want to join the military there is nothing stopping you, if you want to make a donation there are many military organizations which will take your money. If I were a young person the LAST thing I would want is to join the military. Hey, sign up, get killed in Afghanistan, Kosovo or have your life wrecked in Rwanda. If enemies don't get you you can count on a hierarchical, fascist dictatorship treating your life like it isn't worth, well, anything more than a tactical enterprise.
Keeping kids off the street and out of jail is the most idiotic thing I've heard. Basically this means punishing kids because our society (meaning us) can't be bothered listening to them or accomodating their needs.
If YOU aren't prepared to sign up (and even if you are) then stop trying to get other people to do it for you. At a local career web forum I actively discouraged people from joining the military, which is essentially an arm of the american forces. If they want more, they can pay for it themselves.

I too oppose the canadian military being an extension of the US military.

better our youth die on the streets and in our jails?

You state your against the death of our youth in Kosovo and elsewhere.

Yet when I wish to institue technology that will reduce the incidence of Childhood Leukemia , Bronchitis, Asthma and Infant Mortality, you remain silent.

can you at least be consistant?

Dennis Baker

Officially very few. The odds of getting killed are not that high.

Hmmm, I'll change that then, what about this slogan for TV "The odds of getting killed are not that high." Very true, and you'll note in other threads you'll note that I oppose all dictatorships, which is essentially what the military is. Like the Swiss, if canadians controlled our government I would sign up to defend it myself in a heartbeat. I would also support, like the Swiss, arming and training every canadian, in fact I would be lobbying for it. In a country where our biggest threat is our own government-meaning other canadians, I don't see that as something worth defending.

If you look at conscription I can guarantee you that one of the reasons people in canada join the military is economic. You don't see a lot of enlistees in high paying trades with education signing up. If you have few options then that well may be the best. I am an air force brat myself and did two years in the ROTC when I was young and had no options. Keep in mind also that Afghanistan is an illegal war as much as Iraq, if 'the tables turn' you could see canadians being tried for war crimes, we shouldn't even BE there, so one death and one bad experience is too many.

As far as being inconsistent, I don't think so. I'm an active environmentalist and have enough to do. I read your thread but couldn't make heads or tails of it. THere are tons of environmentally friendly power sources, what is lacking is the political will.

Forcing humans to do something they don't want to do hasn't always turned out too well in the past.

In Canada, we have hydro power we could send east-west. Without that state, our civilization would disappear, and we would be living under the American republic--losing our independence and 1st-world standard of living.

We live next to an empire, and you call the government that defends you your enemy. The guys who were killed by the Americans, and anyone else?

Recently a Canadian sailor fell of HMCS Montreal. That's the first sailor who I've heard of dying in the years I've read about the navy.
