At the Commonwealth game in 2002, Jennifer Carroll had the misfortune to wave the Quebec flag in 2002 after she won the silver medal. Dave Johnson, the staunch anti-Quebec coach, forced her to appear before a disciplinary committee from midnight to 2: a.m. It was a crime, according to every English media at the time. When Catriona Lemay-Doan waved the Saskatchewan flag in 1998, nobody cared and it hardly made the news.
How can you explain this?
Here's a picture of Le May Doan: http://www.canoe.ca/SlamNaganoGalleryAr ... 5Fa23.html . Now here is a picture of Carroll: http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2002/12/11/flag_021211 .

Although I agree that the media over-reacted(when don't they?), I don't see Carroll holding a Canadian flag that is 5 times the size of her Quebec flag, the way Le May Doan does. If she had, I doubt very much that there would've been a controversy. And it wasn't a crime: it was a clear-cut violation of protocol, hence the disciplinary hearing.

If memory serves, people weren't too thrilled to see Donovan Bailey adorn a Jamaican flag either. Is it because Canadians hate Jamaica? No. Like Le May Doan, however, Bailey had the common sense to display both.

I challenge you to show that picture of Le May Doan to a bunch of people and ask them what kind of flag she is holding; I bet you the first response out of their mouths will be 'Canadian'.

P.S. I don't think the Brisebois thing was "downplayed" either. As with any story, there were different opinions in the papers and on TV. And Prospal was disciplined, having to go through "diversity training", or whatever it's called. If the English papers over-reacted to the Carroll thing, surely you can admit that French Canadian media over-reacted to the Prospal thing, right?
Just like Gaulois and other federalist told me : blind spots. Caroll was not allowed to display her provincial flag and Lemay-Doan was. Double standards, double standards, double standards...The reason is that the Quebec flag makes Canada vomit.

Oh wow! French Canadians overreacted for Vaclav! What were we supposed to do? Sit down and stupidly smile?

I don`t know if Vaclav was reprimanded, but he didn`t apologize to Brisebois.
