Amethyst: I just removed your <b> tags from your post since they made it much harder to read. Perhaps you wanted <p> (paragraph) tags instead?

"Maybe the immigrants are actually funding welfare for the lazy Canadians."--<br /> That sounds just as <i>stereotypical</i> as the poem above.

I wish you people would all do some more reading from a few dissenting voices before you defend our immigration policy. Immigration feeds and serves capitalism. Rapid population growth via serves capitalism, while harming communities and disaplacing local culture. <br /> <br /> I know it is tempting to immiediately play the race card whenever someone disagrees with you in a democratic manner, but if you believe in democracy, go read some of the poll results from a large number of polling companies and publications on immigration and multiculturalism, and you will be quite shocked (or not?) to learn that current policy is not as popular as you might think. <br /> <br /> It's actually supported by a small number of people, but who cares what most people think, right?<br /> <br /> The west is racist for showing the same pride in their cultures the third world shows for theirs.

Perturb, after living and working in Asia for a year, I have to agree with part of what you say. Immigration=capitalist globalization. There were many South Asians who disliked my presence in their country, to them I was a threat, and some were honest enough to let me know, and I appreciated it very much. Not once did I cry "hate" or "racist" because I was able to empathize with these people. The truth is, these people who told me to go back to my own country, were not racists, but instead, they had fear of me, what I stood for. The fact is that in some parts of South Asia, if one doesn't learn english, one doesn't get a job. I had interviewed alot of S. Koreans and the majority were saying the same thing; they hated learning english, but were being forced to learn it because of the job market. The males were less reluctant to learn, and as the females were becoming more proficient in the english language, they were also getting the jobs. It was no wonder that many of the people who shouted "foreigner go home" were males.

I have no problem with visiting other countries, and working there short term, but labour mobility (also central to the European Union) serves business. Never mind cultural impact. You working in Asia is no big deal, but in places like Toronto it is much different.<br /> <br /> I think we need to be asking whether we should be putting off solving the problems we face with short-term solutions. Most people who come to Canada now come for personal economic gain, to live and work with and for relatives--not to flee danger or settle land for us. We're importing skilled workers who don't need to leave their countries, many of whom are much better off in their former countries and provide essential services to their former countries.<br /> <br /> We are also allowing many of their relatives to be sponsored no questions asked, which is a practice no other western country treate so lackadasically. This puts a strain on our already underfunded health care system.<br /> <br />
