I've lived in Canada, the US and England.

Except for the different colours of money, the fact that hockey isn't on the front page of the sports section, and that I have a private healh care card, there is virtually no difference between living in Canada and the US.

For the Hollywood/media stuff, yes, but the social conventions, assumed rights and freedoms (not necessarily the same as actual)and social interaction, we are much closer to our British roots then to our neighbours to the south. We do not assume it is our <Deity of choice> given right to be armed at all times, that cops are out to persecute us, that public health care is a commy plot. We do not have the record for having the highest percentage of our population in jail, often for 'crimes' that would never come to trial in Canada. Sure, we can talk the talk, get the jokes about media shows, watch the same silly crap on the tube, but we are not the same, and Goddess willing, never will be.

My proof is living 10 years in the United States, a year in England and traveling extensively through Europe.

There are all sorts of examples of Canadians exaggerating the differences. The biggest is Medicare. Ask a Canadian what it means to be a Canadian and nine times out of ten, they'll say "Medicare."

Okay, since Medicare is only about 40 years old, what did it mean to be Canadian before then?

And how does that make Canada different from almost every other industrialized country on earth?

It doesn't. It only does if you define yourself vis-a-vis the United States. Canadians emphasize Medicare because it differentiates us from Americans, not because it is a uniquely Canadian thing.

But that's not unexpected. Given that Canada was borne and defined in part because of the United States, that America so dominates the continent, and that the peoples are so similar, its not surprising Canadians would do so.

Of course there are differences. I think the biggest differences are that Canadians tend to think more about how their actions will effect others while Americans tend to be more optimistic.

But things like guns and prison sentencing do not effect most people in their day to day lives. I have lived here for a decade and I have never seen any of my friends or people I know carry a gun. And I live in one of the gun-totingest states in America!

Drop a Canadian into the American milieu and the Canadian will find there is virtually no difference in how he or she lives their day to day lives. An English Canadian finds it far easier doing so than being dropped in the middle of the Lac St Jean region.
