That's true, but I don't think that Kim Ill Junk or whatever his name is has an ICBM with that much range - I think they have IRBMs that might barely reach LA/Seattle/Vancouver. Hopefully that remains the same.
Now that the Norks have orbited a test vehicle they can put a nuke anywhere they want.

I agree it is somewhat worrisome, but that's what we pay our leaders and military people for - hopefully they have a handle on things and a better idea if this is yet another bluff from a NK desperate leader or a serious threat.
A growing consensus of spooky types is starting to believe that Lil' Kim is just a figurehead and the real power is the generals who back him. The problem with this is that while Kim has traveled outside of NK the generals have not. Thus the only person who knows that NK propaganda does not trump the capabilities of the rest of the world is the guy who probably has no power to do anything.
That means there's guys who have control of nukes who really think they can take us on and win. And they didn't get the memo when China supported UN sanctions that their only friend is unhappy and that they should listen. Nope, now they're just mad at China, too.

As for the EMP issue, there's nothing much we can do about that - I've read a ton of books on it and it seems that, short of burying our civilization a few hundred feet under ground, it a threat we'll have to live with and prepare for.
Bush's missile defense system would have been just perfect for taking out such a threat.
If the Republicans nominate a candidate with a spine next time he/she could easily make hay out of Obama cancelling the program and leaving us open to blackmail from a thug regime like the DPRK.
