And just when you thought they wouldn't do something so stupid that it would make the F-35 deal look sensible in comparison:

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/natio ... story.html

$1:
OTTAWA — The federal budget watchdog says the government’s multibillion-dollar effort to replace the navy’s warship fleet is now on track to cost taxpayers 2.4 times more than first expected.

The parliamentary budget officer estimates it will cost Ottawa nearly $62 billion to replace 15 ships — more than twice the original 2008 budget of about $26 billion.

Jean-Denis Frechette’s analysis says the per-ship price tag has grown to $4.1 billion — up from the $1.7-billion estimate in 2008.

The report estimates the government would only be able to afford six ships if it tries to keep the program on budget.

Ottawa launched a competition last fall asking some of the world’s largest defence and shipbuilding companies to design a potential replacement for the navy’s 12 frigates and three destroyers.

The chosen designs will be constructed by Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, and the new vessels are expected to arrive in the mid-2020s.

Why the increase? Was the estimate too low or have the federal liberals ontario'd this.

The original estimate comes from the start of the project, was in 2008.

The hulls for the new warships won't be laid until at least 2021, when the Arctic patrol (slush buckets) are finished in 2019.

In the 11 years hence, costs have risen.

The Federales have done what they always do, hummed and hawed and twiddled thumbs while claiming to support the Military.

Don't worry because, as usual, none of these ships will ever be laid down let alone launched.

But they'll still cost you a few billion for planning, graft, and 'informational' trips to St. Croix. [B-o]

I can understand a bit of a jump, but having it jump almost 250% seems a bit much.

Well then we can't afford any can we?
Pull a move like BC Premier Richard McBride did in 1914. Pop down to Guns-R-Us in Seattle and buy a whole fucking navy for 1/10th of that.

For a comparison a brand new Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier costs $13 billion each. Factor in the usual fuckery with the exchange rate and for the amount projected for some goddamn frigates and destroyers we could buy three to four of the Fords. Food for thought in a country that certainly doesn't put much thought into anything it does most of the time. :|

Fuck, even the Arleigh Burke destroyers are less than $2 billion each...I'm sure they would do just fine to replace the Tribals.
