Japan's lucky to be a very well-prepared first-world country with many allies. I hope the Chinese, Koreans, Russian, and the U.S. forces in Japan are allowed to help with the humanitarian relief.

Watching NHK. They reported on tsunami that was 7.3 m. They are also showing a huge fire at a refinery north east of Tokyo, which escaped unscathed. The tsunami warning are still Pacific wide, From Peru to Indonesia.

They're now announcing tsunami warnings for ALL Pacific coastlines, including South and North America up to Alaska and to Russia. As of this time there have been over a dozen bad aftershocks since the 9.1 so to expect a series of tsunami waves. Hawaii will get the first wave around 2 a.m. - and just after 4 a.m. for the West Coast here.

See magnitudes of quakes: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ... s_all.html

What they're showing on CNN is just so sad to see. Dreadful destruction.

It's on the NE coast of Honshu and an area that, by local standards, isn't heavily populated. mostly farming and fishing communities. They are worried about the reactors in the area though. Tokyo and all points south are fine.

The US Coast Guard out of McClellan here in Sacramento dispatched two C-130 SAR aircraft to help in the offshore search, the US Navy in the region has been mobilized to assist and the USS Ronald Reagan has been dispatched to the region where it may end up being used as a power plant to substitute for the nuclear power plant that has been shut down. I'm at work right now and my agency does inspections of hospitals after earthquakes and we're preparing a team to go later today.

So far I'm not hearing of any problems along the California coast - but the arrival time has just occurred as I write this.
