Finally a car company producing a car people really want... To some people cars are not just transportation... They are supposed to be fun and exciting....

$1:

GM confirms extra shifts, hours

A GM spokeswoman has confirmed employees at the Oshawa plant are working extra shifts and hours to fill the demand for the popular Chevrolet Camaro.

The Examiner learned of the increased workload Tuesday.

Patti Faith, a spokeswoman for GM, said yesterday that since its release a month ago there are 19,000 Camaros on back order.

Typically, one shift at the Oshawa plant builds the car five days a week, Faith said.

“It’s gotten a lot of buzz around it,” she said.

But the Camaro, described as a fuel-efficient sports car, has proven so popular the company has added an extra day to that shift in June, July and August, moving production to six days a week.

Those workers have also agreed to work during a week at the end of June when production is typically shut down, she said.

Faith said GM will not be hiring more employees to keep up with the demand.

Instead, she said, current employees will get overtime pay.

It’s good news for the industry, Faith said.

“We’re really pleased,” she said.

Cars like the Camaro are usually very popular in the spring and summer months, she said.

GM will continue to monitor the car’s production and popularity, she said.

Union representatives were unavailable for comment.

I've owned 3 Camaros in my day. I would get another. Especially if they come out with the Z28 option again.

But as for this one - 10 years too late I'm afraid. And they should have mothballed the old plant, that tax payers like you and I paid so much to build, instead of razing it.

Great car, no doubt. Looks great inside and out.

However, it's about 5 years too late, IMO.

Ford kicked ass with the Mustang, Dodge went retro and GM sat on their hands. It can only help their situation.

Okay, gas hits $1.30/l and the North American, V8 pickup, SUV-dependant auto-industry collapses, dragging everything into the shitter with it. Then, as the recession widens, oil prices ease and the price of gas falls back to $0.80/l. Then people get silly and buy V8s again for a couple of months (like this pretty new Camaro)...that takes us up to May 28, 2009.

What happens this summer?

I don't want a Camaro. My Jetta is fast plus it fits my kids in, plus its good on gas.
I rather like the new Passat though.....or maybe an Audi A4.......

GM lost the plot a long time ago. I'm not a fan of this bail-out as it reminds me of the case studies I did in school over in the UK.
Those were about the demise of the UK car industry, there were bail-outs, nationalisation etc.
But at the end of the day they were making cars that people didn't want or they were always a year or two behind the japanese or euro products.
Quality control was an issue as was a very politicised work place.

Sound familiar?
The markets are best left to market forces as those forces will prevail in the end. We are just prolonging the agony and paying through the nose to boot.

I want one. If they don't produce one, not a problem. I'll assemble my own brand new '69 'vert.

Gas prices aren't part of the equation for me in a hobby car.

Furthermore, protecting dying industry chokes off innovation, entrepreneurship and competition, destroying the environment for our economy to develop new, modern viable industries for the future. We need to embarce this crisis as opportunity.

Then why do Canadians favor protecting our banking and finance sector? Let's open that up too to stimulate innovation, entrepreneurship and competition....!!!!

I think you're confusing "protection" with "regulation". There are some industry where regulation is needed. Credit markets are too important to be left to unchecked profiteering. A simple comparison between how Canadian banks operated, then rode the last 2 years' waves versus American banks' experiences clearly shows the foresighteness and necessity of banking regulations.

It's change, but I figure they'll adapt. They're being forced to and if they want to survive they will. There is a down side however to forcing the change before the engineering is done, diesel engines in 2010 come to mind.

But I wouldn't count them out yet.

It's not OUR auto sector. It's a multinational based in the US.

It's also about to go tits up after swallowing 19 billion in tax dollars on both sides of the border, AND it’s plan for reorganization was to shut down even more North American plants and produce more vehicles overseas for import.

With respect to the Camero. Pretty..................... impractical. Especially now.
